Celebrating mono.kultur #46: talk and moderated conversation with Francis Kéré, Fiona Shipwright and Matthias Böttger on the issue of ‘Building Community’ at the Deutsches Architektur Zentrum (DAZ), Berlin, 11.03.19.
“I am tempted to invert one of the core questions that appeared in the event description: “Can architecture create a sense of community?” and instead reframe it as, “What kind of architecture can a sense of community create?”
Francis Kéré’s is one answer; what might others be, whether in Gando, Germany or elsewhere?
The second core question, “is architecture a social act?” might also warrant a little rejigging or closer examination of what it is seeking to reveal. Spiro Kostof reminded us back in the 1985, in his book A History of Architecture – Settings and Rituals that: ‘Architecture is a social act and the material theatre of human activity.’”
